An Apothecary is a person who prepares and sells organic and traditional medicines.
An apothecary’s store is a curious establishment that usually smells of the medicines and other concoctions that go into the preparation of these traditional medicines. Bottles, jars, plants, oils, creams and medicines sit in jars and containers.
An apothecary store is full of strange and wonderful things, herbs and plants that easily fascinate and cure a range of ailments and conditions.
Apothecary products are items traditionally sold by an apothecary, who is the historical equivalent of a modern pharmacist. Think of an apothecary store as a Victorian-era pharmacy selling herbal remedies and traditional forms of medicinal preparations.
It’s a fascinating place.
Some Australian apothecary products sold inside a store typically include:
Medicinal Herbs and Plants: Dried or fresh herbs used for their therapeutic properties such as lavender, camomile, peppermint, Ginseng and St John’s wort. These medicinal natural remedies have been proven over centuries to have beneficial effects to our physical state and mental well-being.
Tinctures: Alcohol-based extracts of herbs mentioned above and many more can be reduced down to tincture solutions for a more concentrated medicinal liquid that is both easy to consume and easy to store. Tinctures are traditionally more potent in concentration than loose herbs or plants.
Salves, Balms Ointments and Creams: Creams to help conditions of the skin or the lips are applied to the body for their curative properties. Hundreds, if not, thousands, of these creams and ointments have been sold in apothecary stores over the years.
Essential Oils: Concentrated extracts from plants are used for their aromatic and therapeutic properties. Not so much used for their medicinal properties but for their calming and aromatic benefits.
Pills and Capsules: Solid forms of medicine for oral ingestion that are based on herbal and natural remedies. Pills and capsules are a more modern form of digesting the types of herbal remedies mentioned above in the apothecary store.
Teas and Infusions: Herbal blends such as peppermint and camomile that reduce anxiety and promote a healthier sleep regime are also sold in an apothecary store.
So take a wander inside the store, either in person, or online, and take a look at some of the herbs, and plants, ointments, and tinctures, that we have been using to cure our ills for hundreds of years.
